GABRIEL

world premiere

a new musical by Ron Klipp

directed by Foster Solomon

musical direction by Billy Dye

winter 2021 (specific dates TBD)

GABRIEL is based on the true and little-known Richmond story about the events of the summer of 1800 and the state-wide plot by enslaved Virginians to overthrow their owners and assert their freedom. The conspiracy was led by a twenty-four year old enslaved, literate blacksmith named Gabriel who worked on Thomas Prosser's tobacco plantation in Henrico.  When Governor James Monroe got wind of the planned rebellion he called out the state militia. Gabriel and twenty-five other conspirators were captured, tried, found guilty, and publicly hanged.
