Full Name: Denver Crawford

Character Name: David

Education/Training: Third-year performance major at VCU

Favorite food? Spam Musubi (Spam fried in soy sauce/sugar on top of rice and wrapped with seaweed)

Favorite color? Purple

Paper or plastic? Plastic

What is a pet peeve of yours?  People chewing with their mouths open

What is your most OCD (like) habit?  Anytime I'm sitting at a table or in a chair or anything, no matter where I am, I always have to make sure the chairs and table are parallel or perpendicular to the wall.  If they are even slightly askew, I will fix it.

If you could travel anywhere in the world to escape where would you go?  Hawaii.  I spent two weeks there for my parents' 20th anniversary.  They met and married in Hawaii, so it's a very special place to our family.

If you could live in a constant season which would it be and why?  Autumn.  I love watching the leaves change, wearing light jackets, and being able to drink warm coffee outside without totally freezing.

If you had to live in one room for a year what room would it be and why? I would probably live in my bedroom.  Sleep is just one thing I can't get enough of.

Describe your character in 4 words:  Afraid, gentle, intellectual, and romantic

Without giving any spoilers describe the show in 3 words:  (Not your average) Boy meets Girl

Favorite Role you ever performed?  Evan in The Aliens

What is your dream role?  This is a long ways off, because the character is in his forties, but Dan from Next to Normal is my ultimate dream role.

Why should people come see the show?  It's a fresh take on how mental disorders affect relationships, and although the characters live under strange circumstances, it has many wonderful moments that I think will resonate deeply with the audience.

Final thoughts:  One of my favorite things about this show is that David's character gets to re-discover so many aspects of life that most of us only experience once as children.  David has isolated himself for a year in an environment where he can control everything, and so anything that exists outside of his daily routine doesn't affect him in any way.  Once Julie starts breaking through his barriers, he is taken back to that childlike state of discovery as he becomes familiar with all the things outside of the bathroom that he hasn't been exposed to while he has been inside the bathroom.  It's so much fun to experiment with that sense of wonder, excitement, and fear a person feels when they experience something for the first time, or in David's case, re-experiencing something he has long forgotten.

If you could travel anywhere in the world to escape where would you go? Somewhere tropical and isolated with no mosquitoes (I can dream!)

If you could live in a constant season which would it be and why? Spring—enough temperature variation, plus that beautiful smell of plants growing and the earth waking up.

If you had to live in one room for a year what room would it be and why? A studio apartment! Or, for a not cheating answer, the kitchen—countertops can convert to sleeping space, sink is available for hygiene, cooking food is all important—I’m not about that zip-loc life.

Without giving any spoilers describe the show in 3 words: Quirky, heartfelt, longing

Favorite Role you ever performed? Peter Pan!

What is your dream role? Peter Pan again! (I really really really love flying)

Paper or plastic? Plastic… plastic bags make it easier to make myself a packhourse when hauling groceries from the car to my apartment. Also I reuse the plastic bags as small trashcan liners.

What is a pet peeve of yours? People who chew with their mouths open. Gross. Going on first dates or meeting new people over food is sometimes a challenge because I do not like to watch people eat. Also people who are slow in terms of walking or driving. I could go on and on in terms of my pet peeves…

What is your most OCD (like) habit? When I am getting ready in the morning I have a very specific schedule/order in how I do things.  It bothers me if for some reason I get out of this routine.

If you could travel anywhere in the world to escape where would you go? Back to South Africa.  I studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa for 6 months in college. The arts scene there is extremely interesting and inspiring. Now where is my plane ticket?

If you could live in a constant season which would it be and why? Fall. I love the crisp, cool air, the leaves changing colors, cider with whiskey, and sweaters. Gah I LOVE sweater weather.  I love to curl up with a good book and a glass of wine on a cool autumn night. Yes. And soup. I love soup.

If you had to live in one room for a year what room would it be and why? A master en suite. That way I can sleep, lay in bed, watch tv, read, take showers (I don’t like feeling yucky), and yeah.

Without giving any spoilers describe the show in 3 words: Intelligent. Thought-provoking. Moving.

Favorite Role you ever performed/Show you have worked on? Favorite role ever performed would have to be Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The Boy in the Bathroom has been a very rewarding and challenging experience. I learned a lot about myself as a person and a director. In terms of my time outside of RVA, when I toured with Missoula Children’s Theatre I absolutely loved working on/directing/performing in their version of Frog Prince.

What is your dream role/show to work on? My dream show to work on (direct) is West Side Story. This is one of my all-time favorite musicals that I would absolutely love to direct one day…  but I am also eager to direct new works and any other interesting/peculiar project that comes my way.

Why should people come see the show? It is such a beautiful and delicate piece of new musical theatre.  The actors are all out of this world and do an amazing job of telling this moving story each and every show.  The design elements of the show are stunning and help create the perfect world for the show to live and thrive. I am so extremely proud of everyone who has worked on this show and I am extremely lucky and honored to be surrounded by such immese talent.

Final thoughts: I know that everyone is busy doing a million different things, but this is truly a show that you will not want to miss.  Everyone that leaves has nothing but amazing things to say about the show. So do yourself a favor and get your tickets to this moving new musical. The entire cast and creaative team has worked so hard on this piece and we need your help every show to give this delicate bird wings to fly.
