Inspired by the 1936 film of the same name, Reefer Madness: The Musical takes a decidely tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with “evil” jazz music, sex, and violence.
Directed by Jase Smith, adjunct acting faculty, VCU. Book by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney. Music by Dan Studney. Lyrics by Kevin Murphy.
Cast: Mike Rieman (Jimmy), Jacquelynn Camden (Mary Lane), Kim Jones-Clark (Mae), Chris Hester (Jack/Jesus), Joy Newsome (Sally), Jake Ashey (Ralph), Matt Beyer (The Lecturer), Caylyn Temple and Jackie Prater (Placard Girls).
Ensemble: Timmy Douglas, Lauren English, Kim Exum, Alex Gerber, Matt Mitchell, Gentry Roth, and Eric Stallings.
The highly addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style show stoppers to swing tunes like “Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime” and the Vegas-style “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,” featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. WARNING: This show will go straight to your head!
Reefer Madness: The Musical is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness. It therefore may be inappropriate for younger audiences. Swing by to see the show after dropping the kids off at summer camp!
