Opening October 25th: ‘Spinning Into Butter’ by Rebecca Gilman
posted on October 9, 2007
When a student at an idyllic liberal-arts college in Vermont becomes the apparent victim of an unprecedented hate crime, the incident and its ensuing whirlwind tests the mettle of Sarah Daniels, the young dean of students - and forces her to confront her own prejudices and fears. Each action Sarah takes to manage the situation only escalates the tension on campus, and serves to expose the shallow minds and insincerity of her fellow administrators.

Directed by Morrie Piersol, and featuring Katie McCall, Fred Iocovo, Melissa Johnston-Price, Robert Albertia, Anthony Santiago, and Matt Polson, Butter explores the dangers of racism, outmoded stereotypes, and misguided assumptions - and shines a light on the potential hypocrisies in political correctness.
‘Spinning Into Butter’ was named one of Time Magazine‘s best new plays of 1999. It was first produced by the Goodman Theatre, Chicago, IL; and received its New York premiere at Lincoln Center in 2000.
Playwright Rebecca Gilman is the recipient of numerous awards for her work, including a Guggenheim fellowship; the Prince Prize for commissioning new work; the Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays; and the George Devine Award.
